Cystic Acne Diagram (nodulocystic acne) is the most severe form of acne vulgaris. All acne is somewhat hormonally-related because you go through these massive biological changes during puberty. Women can still suffer from cystic acnes into their twenties and beyond. 
Causes of Cystic Acne are :
  • overactive oil glands
  • excess dead skin cells within the hair follicle (pore), and
  • a large number of acne-causing bacteria, Propionibacteria acnes
Treatment of Cystic Acne are :
  • intralesional corticosteroid injections
  • oral antibiotics
  • oral contraceptives – for women
  • isotretinoin (Accutane)
  • surgical excision and drainage (a doctor makes a small incision in the skin and extracts the infected material)
